US: Cardiff Council shares update on big freeze this week

Wales, United States: The official Facebook page of Cardiff Council shared the information about the big freeze this week.

They took to their official social media account and highlighted in the statement, “There’s a big freeze this week! Using up to 60 tonnes of grit on a typical night our gritters (including the pictured Gareth Hale) will be out helping to keep #Cardiff moving, gritting priority routes on the city’s roads based on data supplied from our weather stations.”

With over 600 miles of roads across Cardiff, it is not possible for all of the roads to be treated with salt with ice or snow forecast, so following consultation with transport providers, the police as well as emergency services, they have identified a priority network of routes that will be pre-salted when freezing conditions are forecast:

• All A roads and priority bus routes

• The majority of B roads

• some C roads

• other non-classified roads

They mentioned looking at the road surface temperatures rather than the air temperature as it is the road surface on which the winter hazards form and could cause a danger to motorists. Depending on conditions, there can be a significant difference between air and road temperatures.

They said they have 12 gritters, including our new compact brine spraying vehicle for the strategic cycle network across the city. Our strategic cycleways, which are incorporated into the road network, are now on our winter maintenance schedules.

Furthermore, these sections are treated separately from the main carriageway salting routes, and we with a brine solution to ensure that winter hazards such as frost and ice do not form.

Along with this, where other cycle facilities are part of the carriageway on designated salting routes, these will also continue to be routinely treated.
