Jamaican teen survives tragic fire that claims three younger brothers

Jamaica: A teenager named Adrianna Lang survived a terrible fire that killed her three younger brothers in their home in Westmoreland, Jamaica. She was badly burned on about 90% of her body and had to be flown to the United States for medical treatment because there were no burn units in Jamaica.

Now, after many difficult months, she will be returning to Jamaica with a story of her survival. Although she is grateful to be alive, she is still grieving the loss of her brothers and finds it very hard emotionally.

After undergoing more than 25 surgeries, the schoolgirl was released from Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston. On her way back home, she stopped in South Florida, where Jamaica’s Consul General for the Southern USA, Oliver Mair, and leaders from South Florida’s Jamaican community met her at the Island Space museum in Broward County to show their support before her flight home.

Stephen Josephs from the Burn Foundation of Jamaica emphasized the importance of Jamaica having a burn unit to help its own citizens and others in the Caribbean. Adrianna’s successful treatment in the United States was only made possible by the generosity of others, and Jamaica should be a leader in providing such care for its own people.
