US Ambassador Philip S Goldberg Commendes Historic ROK-Japan Bilateral Relationship

United States: United States Ambassador to Seoul, Philip S Goldberg, has commended the recently agreed historic bilateral relationships between the Republic of Korea and Japan while promoting the mutual trust between both nations through the active participation of South Korean President Yoon and Prime Minister of Japan Kishida. 

As per the latest updates, the information was shared through the official social media account of the US (United States) embassy in Seoul. The officials from the embassy have claimed that “The agreement to deal with a painful period in history that helps in advancing the trust and reconciliation between the two countries and reflects the immense dedication and commitment of South Korean President Yoon, who are working with Prime Minister Kishida to redefine ROK-Japan bilateral relationship’s future.”

On his part, Ambassador to Seoul, Philip S. Goldberg, highlighted the significance of the taken step by the government of both South Korea and Japan in order to establish mutual cooperation and strategic partnership between both nations. 

Furthermore, the US Embassy officials added that they look forward to partnering even more closely with the firm allies to guarantee the security of the Korean and Japanese people, which can only happen through working together to glorify peace and communicate values across the region and around the world.

According to some sources, in December 1965, Japan and South Korea established diplomatic relations under the pact on basic ties between Japan and the Republic of Korea after the division of Korea. Japan recognized South Korea as the only legitimate government of the whole Korean peninsula.

In addition, Japan and South Korea are neighbours and both major non-NATO allies of the United States in East Asia. Despite this, in recent years, the relationship between the two states has greatly deteriorated and is characterized by strong mutual distrust and several disputes. The sources also highlighted the disputes and mentioned:

– The territorial claims on Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo or Takeshima).

– Japanese prime minister’s visits to Yasukuni Shrine.

– Differing the views on Imperial Japan’s treatment of colonial Korea.

– Japan refused to negotiate Korea’s demands that apologize or pay reparations for the mistreatment of World War II comfort women from Korea. 

Meanwhile, In the social media post updated from the US embassy, it was also emphasized that through the historical step towards the cooperation between both countries, it would also facilitate and provide security to the people of South Korea and Japan.
