Professional Diver Simon Hilbourne shoots Sperm whale in Dominica

Simon Hilbourne, a professional diver who recently travelled to Dominica to view a sperm whale, shot the video. The enormous sperm whale can be seen diving into the deep water and making loud noises in the footage, he stated that sperm whales are noisy animals.

Sperm whales produce the loudest sounds in the animal kingdom and utilise their enormous nostrils for this purpose.

The video of a giant sperm whale seen in the deep waters off Dominica was posted on Facebook by @EurozoneGreen. They wrote, “Spotted here off Dominica in the Caribbean, this female sperm whale is utilising her echolocation to investigate this diver”.

Clicks are short, loud pulses produced by compressing air through the respiratory system and used to communicate and find prey, which is their most frequent and widely researched noise.

Dominica’s dramatic underwater drop-offs along its western shore offer deep, protected bays that are the ideal breeding and calving grounds for sperm whales. The sperm whale is the only animal to live year-round in Dominica, and their sightings are most frequent between November and March.

There are only a specific amount of licences available each year for swimming with sperm whales, and boats may only hold six people at once. This presents a rare opportunity to swim, dive with these amazing animals, and see their enthralling natural behaviour up close.

Many cetaceans, notably the best-studied sperm whale population in the world, can be found in the deep waters of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Dominica.

Approximately 200 resident sperm whales spend their entire lives in the crystal-clear, temperate, blue water that makes for exceptional interactions and in-water viewing.

In addition, 22 of the 33 Caribbean species have been spotted in Dominican waters. Short-fin pilot whales, fake killer whales, melon head whales, pygmy sperm whales, and humpback whales are the most frequently spotted cetaceans. Yet the Sperm Whale is our most stunning ocean behemoth.
