Dominica Alick Athanaze on top of the World, scores fastest fifty on debut

Roseau, Dominica: Alick Athanaze, the 24-year-old Dominican all-rounder, made his debut in West Indies in a record-breaking style. During the match against UAE at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, he scored a record-breaking fastest ODI fifty in just 26 balls, surpassing the record of Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya who also scored a fifty in 26 balls during his debut in March 2021 against England.

The Dominican-born Alick Athanaze reached on the top of the list of fastest fifty scored during the debut, followed by Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya (50-26), Ishan Kishan (50-33), Newzealand’s John Morrison (50-35) and Ronald Butcher of Barbados (50-35).

It was a three-match ODI between West Indies and UAE in which the West Indies clean sweep UAE by winning all three matches in their country.

UAE won the toss and elected to bat first. The team collapsed in just 36 overs scoring 184 runs. Vritiya Aravind, the Indian-born, was the top scorer from UAE side. He contributed 70 runs in 75 balls, almost half the total score.

The Windies comfortably achieved the target in 35th over with 89 balls remaining. Alick Athanaze played record-breaking innings, scoring the fastest fifty on debut. He scored 65 runs in 45 balls.

Yesterday also marked a special occasion for Dominica as two Dominicans featured on a West Indies team; Kavem Hodge was the other Dominican on the team.

Former Dominica Cricket Association president Emmanuel Nanthan was in the UAE to witness the young Dominicans in action.

On Thursday, June 15, 2023, West Indies and UAE will clash again in the seventh World Cup qualifier match. West Indies still have to qualify for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as the two-time world champions finished outside the automatic qualification spots. That’s why the Windies have to finish in the top two qualifiers in Zimbabwe during June and July.

June 24- West Indies vs Zimbabwe
June 26- West Indies vs Netherlands
