Trinidad and Tobago: Three suspects arrested for shooting man in Maloney Gardens

Three suspects were taken into police custody within minutes of allegedly shooting a man in Maloney Gardens, D’Abadie, yesterday, June 15, 2023.

Northern Division–North officers acted quickly following a report of a Wounding with Intent incident and intercepted a vehicle with three occupants around 8:50 am yesterday. The officers also found two illegal firearms and ammunition after searching the vehicle.

According to police reports, around 8:30 am on Wednesday 14th, June 2023, a man was standing at the South Western entrance of Building 9 Maloney Gardens, D’Abadie, when two armed men approached him. The armed assailants then pointed the firearms toward the man, and several loud explosions were heard.

The victim ran in a Westerly direction away from the assailants, who proceeded in a Southerly direction onto the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, where they escaped in an awaiting vehicle.

The victim was taken to the Arima Health Facility to seek medical attention. Crime Scene Investigators Northern Division processed the scene and recovered 14 spent nine-millimetre shells and one projectile.

Around 8:50 am, PC Rigsby and PC Reid were on mobile patrol when they received a transmission from the Northern Division Operation Centre (NDOC) relative to a silver Nissan Tiida involved in a report of wounding with intent in the Maloney District.

The officers then observed the vehicle driving at high speed, proceeding South along Golden Grove Road, Piarco, with three occupants. The officers intercepted the vehicle, and when a search was conducted, two firearms and several rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition were found.

With the assistance of Ag/Cpl Cassar and a party of the Northern Division ERP officers, the vehicle’s occupants were arrested and conveyed to the Maloney Police Station, along with the seized items.

Meanwhile, one man was arrested following a school stakeout exercise conducted in the Malabar district of the Northern Division –North yesterday, following reports of a series of break-ins and thefts at a primary school in the area.

Around 2:30 am, whilst in an unmarked vehicle along La Chance Trace Extension, the officers observed a man riding a bicycle in a westerly direction along the said roadway with a blue knapsack on his back. The man then rode past the unmarked vehicle about four times and looked toward the officers.

This aroused the officers’ suspicion, and based on information and description previously received, they observed the said man to be fitting the same. The officers announced themselves and then chased as the suspect attempted to elude them.

A few minutes later, the man was stopped along Subero Street, Malabar, Arima, where the officers questioned him. When they searched the man, nothing illegal was found; however, officers found two screwdrivers while carrying out a search in his knapsack.

The officers then arrested the suspect, cautioned him, and conveyed him to the Malabar Police Post to be charged with Loitering and Being in Possession of House Breaking Implements.
