Jamaica: Teen’s Body recovered after three-day search

Westmoreland, Jamaica: The close-knit community of Big Bridge in Westmoreland mourns the loss of 18-year-old Juneay ‘Junior’ McKoy. After an exhaustive three-day search, the teen’s lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon, submerged in the waters of the Cabarita River.

McKoy, who hailed from a Manchester address, met with difficulties while swimming, leading to a frantic search operation.

The Zone Four Commander for Little London and the Negril Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shaunjaye Mitchell, confirmed that McKoy’s body was found approximately 500 meters from the bridge, with the assistance of the marine police and dedicated community members.

The discovery, made shortly after 3 pm, marked the culmination of a collaborative effort between law enforcement and citizens.

DSP Mitchell mentioned that investigations are underway, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death. Notably, no signs of violence were observed on the young man’s body.

She expressed her gratitude amidst the trauma, and McKoy’s mother, Denise Morgan, thanked the Big Bridge community.

“I am grateful, I am very happy I got my son’s body to bury, and thank you to everyone, including the ladies of Big Bridge,” Morgan conveyed to Observer Online on Wednesday evening.

Juneay McKoy had recently arrived in Westmoreland, joining his cousin Floyd “Souljie” Smith to engage in construction work. The close bond between the two cousins is evident, with Smith praising the local fishermen who played a pivotal role in locating McKoy’s body.

As the community reels from this tragic loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of water-related activities.

The collaborative efforts of law enforcement, citizens, and local fishermen highlight the strength of community spirit in times of adversity.

As the investigation unfolds, the residents of Big Bridge come together to support one another, united in grief for a promising young life lost too soon.
