Mayaro Arson suspect denied bail on eight counts of attempted murder

Mayaro T&T: A 61-year-old man, Ramsaran Kowlesser, has been denied bail on eight counts of attempted murder in connection with an arson incident that unfolded in Mayaro on November 13th. The incident left a family, including three minors and four adults, traumatized and their home completely destroyed.

Kowlesser, a resident of Mafeking Road, Mafeking Village, Mayaro, was charged on November 15th by PC Farley from the Mayaro Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The charges stem from an incident that transpired on the fateful night when a family was abruptly awakened by cracking sounds, the smell of smoke, and flames engulfing their dwelling.

According to police reports, at 10 pm on November 12th, the family had secured their home, locking all doors and windows before retiring to bed. However, at 2:30 am the next day, a smashing sound at a bedroom window alarmed one of the occupants. Upon investigation, she discovered a man who allegedly threw a liquid on her before hurling a lit Molotov cocktail into her room, setting her on fire.

The brave woman immediately raised the alarm, prompting family members to evacuate the house. Tragically, the entire house was consumed by the blaze, necessitating the intervention of Mayaro CID officers and personnel from the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service. The fire was eventually extinguished, but not before causing severe damage.

The family, as well as the suspect, was taken for treatment. The woman who bore the brunt of the attack was reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital. The suspect, Ramsaran Kowlesser, was subsequently arrested on November 13th by Mayaro CID detectives.

During the court proceedings at the Mayaro Magistrates’ Court, Magistrate Debby Ann Bassaw denied bail to Kowlesser, citing the gravity of the charges. He faces eight counts of attempted murder, with the victims comprising three minors aged seven months, six, and nine, as well as four adults aged 28, 34 (twice), 52, and 71.

As the legal process unfolds, the Mayaro community remains on edge, grappling with the aftermath of this heinous crime. The denial of bail underscores the severity of the charges, and the community awaits justice for the victims of this shocking and tragic event.
