United States: The Governor of Texas- Greg Abbott, announced on Wednesday night that immigrants would be transported from the Lone Star State to Chicago in the latest iteration of his controversial busing program.
According to the Abbott’s Office, the first busload of immigrants reached Chicago’s Union Station on Wednesday night as the Windy City became the third destination city for asylum-seeking immigrants who are being transported from Del Rio, Texas.
Along with this, he has already sent migrants to Chicago, Washington DC and New York City.
Abbott mentioned in the statement, “To continue providing much-needed relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join fellow sanctuary cities Washington, DC, and New York City as an additional drop-off location.”
“Mayor Lightfoot likes to tout the responsibility of her area to welcome all regardless of legal status. I see this responsibility in action as these migrants got the resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them.”
In the month of April, Abbott started transporting immigrants from the border to Washington. Immigrants began teaching in New York City in the month of June.
In addition, the bus program Abbott, which uses both taxpayer’s money and private donations, has racked up a price tag of $12 million, or about $1,300 per immigrant bused to the East Coast thus far.
The immigrants part of Abbott’s program are not illegal immigrants. They have cleared the first step in looking for asylum and have been granted legal permission to remain in the nation. At the same time, the federal authority made the decision on whether they qualify for asylum.
Moreover, the governor’s office has maintained that the bus program is voluntary and that immigrants can get off the bus anytime they want, but immigrants aboard a Texas-to-Big Apple called 911 after they stated that they were not allowed to get off in Tennessee.
