Katmandu: US Embassy Nepal expresses condolences to Judy Heumann, an influential disability rights activist

Katmandu: US Embassy Nepal expresses its condolences on the demise of the influential disability rights activist Judy Heumann, an unmatched trailblazer for human rights who passed away earlier this week.

 On the social media account, US Embassy remarked that she worked tirelessly to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities around the world were protected and strengthened.

In addition to this, they further provided some limelight on the life story of Judy. They added, “Growing up as a child with a disability due to polio, Judy was denied the right to enter kindergarten when she was deemed a “fire hazard” because she used a wheelchair. As an adult, she was denied the right to teach because of her disability, but sued in Federal Court and won her case.”

Furthermore, they added that Judy always voluntarily led the way for the passage of monumental laws that resulted in advancing the rights of people with disabilities. In regard to this, she was the World Bank’s first advisor on disability and development and served as the US State Department’s first senior advisor on international disability rights. 

 “I join so many around the world in mourning the passing of Judith Heumann, a civil rights and disability rights icon, a pioneer within the State Department, and a beloved colleague. Judy leaves behind a world and is more inclusive for all because of her relentless efforts,” Secretary of State, Antony Blinken said of her death.

One of the Washington social media users, Surendra Shrestha, a Member of Lions clubs international, expressed his condolences to Judy, took to the comment section, and stated, “Rest in peace. May her departed soul rest in heaven. We will remember your tireless efforts for disability right.”

While another user Ganga Bahadur Kunwar, a teacher at a primary school also stated, Rest in peace. We are proud of you. “आत्माले शान्ति पाओस्। हामीलाई तपाईंमा गर्व छ।” which is translated as “May the soul rest in peace. We are proud of you”. The third user, Rajendra Prasad Subedee, also expressed his condolences and quoted, “Heartfelt condolences”.
