Pakistan: People protests against govt over shortage of wheat, power

Pakistan, Baltistan: According to the reports, the People of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Gilgit-Baltistan protested in two districts of Pakistan over the shortage of electricity and wheat.

Protestors were raising slogans against the Pakistan government at Zulfiqarabad Chowk, and this crisis has been going on in Pakistan for the past two weeks. As per residents, they are suffering a lot, and sometimes they have to deprive of even two hours of regular electricity supply, making their lives more difficult amid winter.

One of the protestors said, “Chief Minister of Gilgit and Baltistan should be here to resolve our issues, but instead to be here, he is in Lahore in order to protect Prime Minister Imran Khan.”

Meanwhile, the citizens of Ghanche’s Barah village, the hometown of GB Local Government Minister Haji Abdul Hameed, also protested against the wheat shortage. The Protestors also blocked Siachen Road and staged a sit-in to press the authorities to fulfil their demands.

Because of the long power cuts, people seem angry in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. The city of Skardu has been left totally without electricity for the past three months. Load-shedding has become a daily issue.

Despite having ample water resources in a region known for it, the state of the power supply has deteriorated over the years. Pakistan has an estimated hydropower potential of 60,000 MW, but currently, only 10,251 MW of hydropower capacity is installed, accounting for about 25% of the total installed capacity. In response, past governments have resorted to imports as a simple fix.
