Trinidad and Tobago: Toco Netballers Shoot for Championship

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: A group of Toco teenagers are poised to achieve greatness at the Republic Bank Laventille Netball League.

The young men and women, who are members of the Toco Police Youth Club, led by WPC Suzette Kelly and Assistant Coach Isha Marcano-Mitchell, have been working towards a great season with hard work, discipline and sportsmanship. They see the tournament as an avenue to develop and showcase their talents.

They have entered the Inters and A1 Division, which will continue every Saturday throughout the month of September-November 2023, at the Nelson Mandela Park, Port-of-Spain. This is the first time these young men and women have entered, and are excited to be a part of the 20 teams competing.

The divisions range from Beginners, B, Inters, A2, A1, and Premiership. According to WPC Kelly, “Our division has just started. The teams are full of excitement mixed with some nerves, as is expected, having entered a big league such as this.”

She added, “Entering this league was also aimed at preparing them for their debut on international soil as some of the players are expected to participate in the US 2023 Open Netball Championship from November 3-5″.

“It is a great accomplishment as a leader, especially coming from a rural community. I am able to give them an opportunity and safe space to develop their talents and learn from other netballers. I am so grateful to Ms Lilly and her team for welcoming us”.

WPC Kelly shared encouragement to other young athletes and teams, saying, “I would like to say to my team and aspiring netballers you can do it, never give up on yourself, be the best you can be. Last, but not least, always be thankful for what you have.”
