Weather Update: Steve Lyttle shares first weather forecast of 2023 of Carolinas

United States: Former Charlotte Observer weather writer Steve Lyttle, gives shared updates on Carolinas weather, the first weather forecast of 2023. He ends 2022 by the numbers. 

He took to his official social media account and highlighted in the statement, “Good morning, and Happy New Year. For me and fellow Ohio State fans, we didn’t get more than a minute or two in 2023 without already experiencing a huge disappointment. But if that’s the worst we get from 2023, it is not bad. And congrats to the UGa and TCU fans.”

2022 is left on a cloudy, foggy note, and people will continue that trend into the start of 2023. But here is a statistical look at the past year, according to National Weather Service numbers measured at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

 WARMEST — 101 (June 22)

 COLDEST — 9 (December 24)

 RAINIEST — 2.54 inches (September 30, courtesy of Hurricane Ian)

 90-DEGREE DAYS — 70 (average is 44; the record is 88; our 2022 was in the upper 10% of years measured)

RAINIEST DAYS — More than 1 inch fell on March 8, 9 and 12; 

April 5 and 18; July 30, September 30, and December 22.

 SNOWFALL — 4.3 inches (about 1 inch below average). It snowed on January 16 (2.2 inches); January 20 (trace); January 21 (1.9); January 22 (trace); January 28 (trace); and January 29 (0.2 inches). We got measurable snow on three straight weekends in January.

 First 70-DEGREE day: We didn’t have to wait long. We had a record-high 78 degrees last New Year’s Day.

 LAST 70-DEGREE DAY — December 8 (70).

  FIRST 80-DEGREE DAY — March 3 (85).

  LAST 80-DEGREE DAY — November 7 (82).

  FIRST 90-DEGREE DAY — May 19 (93).

  LAST 90-DEGREE DAY — September 22 (96).

  100-DEGREE DAYS — June 22 (101).

  90-DEGREE STREAK — longest was 17 days (July 15-31).

  LAST FREEZE — April 10 (low of 31)

  FIRST FREEZE — October 19 (30).

Today: Low clouds and fog will yield a mix of sun and clouds around midday. Mild, with a high of 63.

TONIGHT: Low clouds and dense fog redeveloping by late evening and continuing overnight. Mild, with a low of 47.

MONDAY: We’ll start once again with low clouds and fog. And once again, a mix of sun and clouds will develop by late morning. And once again, it will be mild, with a high around 65.

MONDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Low near 50.

TUESDAY: Any morning sun will give way to clouds. It will be very mild, with a high around 65.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Showers arrive by evening and continue overnight. Unseasonably mild, with a low near 60.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy and wet, with off-and-on showers. A few thunderstorms will develop after 4 or 5 a.m., and we’ll have to keep an eye on that situation. Very mild, with a high of 67. The rain should end by early to mid-afternoon.

THURSDAY: Sunshine returns, but it will be quite a bit cooler, with a high near 55.

FRIDAY: Sunny and chilly. The high of 50 will be 2 degrees below the January 6 average.

SATURDAY: Sunny and seasonably chilly. High of 51.

Looking ahead: It looks as if another warm-up is in the cards for the following week.
