Georgetown, Guyana: 41-year-old South African Imran helped Guyana Amazon Warriors win their first Caribbean Premier League trophy at their home. They dethroned four-time CPL winners Trinbago Knight Riders by nine wickets with 36 balls left.

Imran Tahir finished this season as the second-most wicket-taking bowler. He took 18 wickets throughout the campaign, with two in the final.

The captain led the side to their first-ever trophy, ending up as the 2nd highest wicket-taker of the tournament. His bowling figures were 2.2-0-7-3 and 4-0-8-2 in the Qualifier-2 and Final, respectively.

The five-time runner-ups finally lifted the trophy after waiting for a decade. Guyana Amazon Warriors ended up as runner-ups in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019. GAW lifted the CPL 2023 trophy by defeating Trinibago Knight Riders, the same opponent that beat them convincingly in the Qualifier-1.

The GAW’s 44-year-old skipper, Imran Tahir, surpassed the record of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni as the oldest skipper to win the title. MS Dhoni was 41 years old when he led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to lift their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy.

During the match, Guyana Amazon Warriors won the toss and elected to bowl first. Trinbago Knight Riders collapsed at just 94 with 11 balls left to play. The team got all out at 94.

The GAW’s opening batsman finished the job by himself. Pakistan’s youngster, who performed outstandingly in the entire campaign, scored another fifty and finished the game with a winning six. He scored 52 in 41 balls, hitting 2 fours and 5 sixes.

Guyana Amazon Warriors lifted their first CPL trophy by defeating Trinbago Knight Riders by 9 wickets with 36 balls remaining.

Irfan Ali, the president of Guyana, congratulated the team on their maiden championship win. In his address, he wrote, “To the Guyana Amazon Warriors Franchise, management, Captain Imran Tahir and team, congratulations on nothing short of an exceptional tournament”.

“You brought professionalism, teamwork, collective responsibility and commitment together to create this historic and memorable victory for Guyana”.
