Weather Update: Carolinas to see some rays of sun on upcoming days

United States: Steve Lyttle, the Former Charlotte Observer weather writer, gives updates on the weather of Carolinas, the sun managed to break through the clouds, and there was a bit more mixing in the atmosphere.

At this time of the year, there was a very low sun angle, and it was tough to heat the atmosphere enough to cause “mixing.” Without the atmosphere mixing, as well as with a moist south wind, there is no mechanism to erode the low clouds.

People will observe some of the forecasts about the afternoon sun afternoon, but the same basic mechanism will be in place. If people want real clearing, they will have to wait until Thursday, when a cold front moves through. Moreover, that will switch the wind direction to the northwest, as well as which will dry the atmosphere. Of course, it will also mark the return of colder weather.

He took to his official social media account and highlighted in the statement, “Well, imagine that! The sun managed to break through the clouds today — unlike yesterday. We got a bit more mixing in the atmosphere this morning, and it allowed the deck of low clouds to break up. Let’s assume, for a second, that the cloud deck won’t return (something that could indeed happen). If so, the sunshine will translate into warmer temperatures this afternoon than we had Sunday. In fact, our afternoon high today could be around 15 degrees above average for January 2.”

More low clouds are expected tonight, and people could awaken to foggy conditions again Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, however, a robust storm system (the same system responsible for West Coast flooding and heavy mountain snows) will be approaching.

That storm is expected to trigger a severe weather outbreak Tuesday in parts of the South, as well as it will be a weather-maker for people on Wednesday. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., has an area at a Level 2 risk (of five levels) for severe thunderstorms and even a few tornadoes Wednesday.

TODAY: A mix of sun and clouds and unseasonably warm, with a high around 65.

TONIGHT: Overcast, with fog developing again. Our overnight low of 51 is what we normally get for a high temperature at this time of year.

TUESDAY: Clouds, for the most part, and unseasonably warm. It also will become breezy. High of 67.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy, with showers arriving by evening and continuing overnight. Thunderstorms could move into the area by 4 or 5 a.m. Wednesday. It will be unseasonably mild, with a low around 60.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy, breezy, and unseasonably warm, with a high of 67. Off-and-on showers and a few thunderstorms are likely in the morning, and some of the storms could be heavy. Showers and storms will taper off by early afternoon.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy and not as mild. Low near 45.

THURSDAY: Sunshine, mixed with a few clouds, and mild — but not as warm as earlier in the week. High of 58.

FRIDAY: Sunny and colder, with a high of 49.

SATURDAY: Clouds, some sun, and a chance of a shower or two. High of 54.

SUNDAY: A mix of sun and clouds and chilly. High near 50.
